Antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of Staphylococcus spp. from domestic and wild animals Ciência Rural
Godoy,Isabela de; Moraes,Danny Franciele da Silva Dias; Pitchenin,Letícia Camara; Rosa,Janaina Marcela Assunção; Kagueyama,Francielle Cristina; Silva,Aline de Jesus da; Dutra,Valéria; Nakazato,Luciano.
ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and diversity of veterinary clinical isolates of Staphylococcus and analyze their antimicrobial susceptibility. One hundred Staphylococcus spp. clinical isolates from domestic and wild animals were subjected to partial sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene to species determination. Antimicrobial susceptibility was obtained by a disk diffusion test against six antibiotics: amoxicillin (AMX), cephalexin (LEX), ciprofloxacin (CIP), erythromycin (ERY), gentamicin (GEN) and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (SXT). The most common specie was S. pseudintermedius (61%, 61/100) and resistance to ERY (57%, 57/100), SXT (50%, 50/100) and AMX (46%, 46/100) was detected most frequently. In total, 40% (40/100) of...

Characterization of Coagulase-Negative Staphylococci and pheno-genotypic beta lactam resistance evaluation in samples from bovine Intramammary infection Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Melo,D.A.; Motta,C.C.; Rojas,A.C.C. M.; Soares,B.S.; Coelho,I.S.; Coelho,S.M.O.; Souza,M.M.S..
ABSTRACT This study aimed to identify Coagulase-Negative Staphylococci (CoNS) species isolated from bovine mastitis, through phenotypic and PCR-RFLP (Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism-Polimerase Chain Reaction) methods and to compare both techniques to matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) technique. Among them, the PCR-RFLP method, using a partially conserved sequence of the groEL gene, is a promising alternative, because of its reproducibility and reliability. On the other hand, the proteomic technique MALDI-TOF MS provides an accurate and much faster diagnosis and has been increasingly employed in microbiological identification. The pheno-genotypic profiles of beta-lactam resistance were also...

Detection of the mecA gene and identification of Staphylococcus directly from blood culture bottles by multiplex polymerase chain reaction BJID
Rocchetti,Taisa Trevizani; Martins,Katheryne Benini; Martins,Patricia Yoshida Faccioli; Oliveira,Rogério Antonio de; Mondelli,Alessandro Lia; Fortaleza,Carlos Magno Castelo Branco; Cunha,Maria de Lourdes Ribeiro de Souza da.
ABSTRACT Introduction: Staphylococcus spp. – both S. aureus, including methicillin-resistant strains (MRSA) and coagulase negative staphylococci (CoNS) – are relevant agents of healthcare-associated infections. Therefore, the rapid recognition of MRSA and methicillin-resistant CoNS from blood stream infections is critically important for patient management. It is worth noting that inappropriate empiric therapy has been associated with higher in-hospital mortality. Material and methods: In this study we evaluated a multiplex polymerase chain reaction (multiplex PCR) standardized to detect Staphylococcus spp., S. aureus, and mecA gene-encoded oxacillin resistance directly from blood culture bottles. A total of 371 blood cultures with Gram-positive...

Influence of the cleaning system of conveyor belts on microbiological quality of poultry meat Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Julião,T.A.; Cortezi,A.M.; Rossi,G.A.M.; D’Abreu,L.F.; Balieiro,J.C.C.; Vidal,A.M.C..
ABSTRACT This study focused on assessing the microbiology of conveyor belts surfaces, cleaned or not with pressurized water, and verification of the influence of this process on the microbiological quality of poultry meat. A reduction on mesophilic, psychrotrophic and Enterobacteriaceae counts (P<0.05) on dry conveyor belts compared to wet ones was observed. For the chicken leg (consisting of drumstick and thigh) samples, no statistically significant differences were detected on counts of indicators of microorganisms on poultry legs (composed by drumstick and thigh). For poultry meat conducted on wet or dry conveyor belts, 99% and 86%, were positive for Listeria spp, respectively. Only one sample of chicken leg was positive for presence of L....

PREVALENCIA DE MASTITIS BOVINA SUBCLÍNICA Y MICROORGANISMOS ASOCIADOS: COMPARACIÓN ENTRE ORDEÑO MANUAL Y MECÁNICO, EN PERNAMBUCO, BRASIL Rev Salud Anim.
Ruiz,A.K; Ponce,P; Gomes,G; Mota,R.A; Elizabeth,Sampaio; Lucena,E.R; Benone,S.

Temporal profile of antimicrobial resistance exhibited by strains of Staphylococcus spp. isolated from cases of bovine mastitis for 20 years (1992-2011) Ciência Rural
Kowalski,Ananda Paula; Maboni,Grazieli; Espindola,Julia Pires; Foletto,Ariane; Bandeira Junior,Guerino; Pötter,Luciana; Botton,Sônia de Avila; Vargas,Agueda Castagna de.
Records of in vitro susceptibility tests performed between 1992 and 2011 were retrospectively reviewed in order to evaluate the dynamic profiles of possible changes in antimicrobial resistance of Staphylococcus spp. isolated from milk samples of cows with mastitis during two decades. The results of 2,430 isolates tested by disk diffusion technique for susceptibility to oxacillin, penicillin, ampicillin, cephalexin, norfloxacin, tetracycline, sulfazotrim, gentamicin, and neomycin were analysed. Comparisons were performed between the percentages of resistance to antimicrobials and their classes and also between the decades studied. Additionally, the possible tendency or changes in the behaviour of these pathogens against the major drugs used in the last two...

The impact of food manufacturing practices on food borne diseases BABT
Sousa,Cristina Paiva de.
Food-borne illness is a major international problem and an important cause of reduced economic growth. The contamination of the food supply with the pathogens and its persistence, growth, multiplication and/or toxin production has emerged as an important public health concern. Most of these problems could be controlled with the efforts on the part of the food handlers, whether in a processing plant, a restaurant, and others. In contrast with most chemical hazardous compounds, the concentration of food pathogens changes during the processing, storage, and meal preparation, making it difficult to estimate the number of the microorganisms or the concentration of their toxins at the time of ingestion by the consumer. This review shows main microorganisms...
